Trash Talkin’

Who says “trashy” can’t be fabulous?

When decorating your space, there would be no better way to show how chic you truly are than by giving even your waste paper a beautiful place to call home.   In my search for all things fabulous, I have come across a few options that have been really well designed (which is key in my opinion).

Below are some stylish examples of waste paper bins that would say a lot about one’s owner… now, let talk trash!

This clean-lined and tailored version would look right at home in a sophisticated transitional apartment.  The oval shaped grip hole on one side allows this bin to also be hung (if you desire to hide your mess).

Clean lined

The next two examples were inspired by the contents they are intended for…

In this design, each of the bins comes in sizes that directly correlate to the paper to be disposed in them.  They are made from laser cut and bent sheets of metal.  Very minimalist and crisp… just like paper.

Bent Metal Waste Paper Baskets

This design needs very little explanation… it’s for those of us who crumple our paper before we toss it.  Very playful and modern.

The next two examples are my favorites… they evoke a high-fashion feeling with a hint of old-worldliness…. Like they’d grace the offices of Vogue Magazine or something.

And finally, if you've accumulated large piles of paperwork … you can never go wrong with a good-looking version of an old classic.   This would never go out of style!

Another fine example of Design being in the Details.

Even your trash can look delightful!

We are doing a little rearranging of spaces here at GF and so that meant it was time to clean up and clean out some of my files.  I ran across my favorites folder and it was fun to page through and see what I had stored away to be looked at later, some things didn't quite catch my eye like they must have when I first filed them away but this magazine cover from Elle Decor, December 2006 still did.  I love the brightness and simplicity of the art.

It’s Not Too Late…

Midwest Home 002
The days of summer seem to be dwindling; it was pitch dark at 9:11 last night! Big design projects may seem TOO big and daunting to begin, but there are many ways we can celebrate that wonderful relaxed feeling summer represents. And it is a good time to dream and plan for the Fall!

This weekend I…

– freshened the front entry pot with a twisted juniper and kept it clean-lined by simply spreading cocoa beans as cover. I like the "form", and it will go through the Fall and look good with sparkly lights during the holidays.

– bought a rosemary topiary at the same nursery, placed it on my kitchen bay windowsill and snipped off some sprigs to add to a Mario Batali recipe for stuffed chicken thighs. Fresh asparagus, a green salad with salty viniagrette and a $9 bottle of crisp, cold 2008 Coteaux du Languedoc,Picpoul de Pinet rounded out the dinner Friday evening. We sat for hours..new Pottery Barn chunky white candles in Simon Pearce hurricanes, straw placemats and white hand -"ironed" damask linen napkins set the table.

– sat on my tiny deck off the kitchen listening to the rustle of the leaves in the trees and noticed the soft grey of the underside of the leaves. The color reminded me of Benjamin Moore Classic Grey I recently used on a project, and I think I will use it for my own bedrrom this Fall with touches of my favorite green and a hint of peacock blue.

The seasons provide one the opportunity to approach our rooms and life differently. Summer is a time to infuse a "natural" look..to enjoy simple pleasures. Fall will soon come, and we can button up and begin adding layers of cashmere throws and perhaps, a touch more formality.

For now, I quote Tom Delavan, an editor at large for the now defunct DOMINO magazine..
"Fresh white sheets, a clean desk, and an entire day where I have nothing to do."
